Sunrise Credit Union is a social and environmentally conscientious company that gives back to our communities.

With that in mind, Sunrise Credit Union is making a three-year, $15,000 commitment to the Weed Harvester Project at Minnedosa Lake.

Minnedosa Lake is a human-made lake near Minnedosa, Manitoba, in desperate need of aquatic weed control. Increased weed proliferation and siltation have reduced the length of the lake by an estimated 15-20% at the northern portion. If left unchecked, the percentage will increase, and the loss of useable area will have a severe economic impact on the community due to a decrease in usage of the lake and tourism dollars. A weed harvester will improve the lake's water quality in an environmentally sustainable way while also controlling unwanted weed growth.

“The Friends of Lake Minnedosa formed approximately three years ago. We have 11 volunteers who have spent hundreds of hours working to improve the conditions at this beautiful little lake. It is so gratifying and makes all the work seem worthwhile when we receive such generosity from local businesses such as Sunrise Credit Union.” said Brian Martineau, Chair, Friends of Lake Minnedosa, “We want to take this opportunity to thank the management and staff of the Sunrise Credit Union. Without your support and the work and support of others, our "SAVE THE LAKE" projects can and will succeed.”

"By making a three-year financial commitment to the Friends of Lake Minnedosa, Sunrise Credit Union is showing its support for the community and highlighting the importance of Minnedosa Lake as an important asset to our area." said Minnedosa branch manager Terry McLenehan, "Making the lake cleaner, safer and more usable and accessible to the public is a win-win for Minnedosa, our local businesses economically, and in continuing to have a vibrant community."

"I have always been proud that our local credit union had been front and center in their support of worthy projects.” said Friends of Lake Minnedosa committee member Bob Jones, “It appears that this community-minded spirit will continue under the Sunrise Credit Union umbrella, and we thank them for that."

With the recent approval from the Department of Fisheries and Oceans and the support of the Town of Minnedosa and RM of Minto-Odanah, plans are underway to secure the weed harvester and associated equipment and begin harvesting later this year.
