Why Debit Mastercard?
The co-badged Debit Mastercard allows cardholders to make purchases using different payment networks, providing flexibility for domestic debit transactions as well as online and international purchases through the Mastercard network. All transactions draw funds directly from the cardholder’s Sunrise Credit Union account; the card does not function as a credit card. It offers the freedom to shop with one card directly from the cardholder’s bank account.

The Debit Mastercard is a debit card—not a credit card. It operates on the Mastercard network, allowing you to use it anywhere Interac or Mastercard is accepted, including online and internationally. Purchases are paid directly using the funds available in your Sunrise account.
All members will receive a Debit Mastercard, regardless of age, as this is replacing your MemberCard. There is no application or approval process since this isn’t a credit card. However, if you are under the age of 12, you must have a parent or guardian sign the PIN agreement, just as with the previous MemberCard. If you are between the ages of 12 and 18, you do not require consent from a parent or guardian.
Beginning with May 2026 renewals, you will receive your new card in the mail based on your MemberCard renewal date. All MemberCards will be replaced over the next two years.
If you would like to replace your MemberCard with a Debit Mastercard right away, visit your local branch, and they will be happy to assist you.

A Debit Mastercard offers additional flexibility and convenience:
- Shop online anywhere Mastercard is accepted
- Make in-person purchases worldwide wherever Interac (in Canada) and Mastercard are accepted
- Travel with ease, including booking flights, hotels, and making purchases internationally
Important: Tap payments are not available outside of Canada. When travelling, you’ll need to insert your card and enter your PIN for in-person purchases.

It is a personal choice. The advantage of the Debit Mastercard is that funds are immediately withdrawn from your account, so you are only spending what you have. A credit card can be useful for building your credit history and provides a backup payment option in situations where debit may not be accepted or available.
MemberCards will be discontinued, as they are being replaced with the new Debit Mastercard. You can use the Debit Mastercard just like you did with your MemberCard.
This is a debit card, not a credit card, therefore there is no credit impact. This will not affect credit scores or be reported to any credit bureau.
Yes, the daily limits applied to your previous MemberCard will also apply to your new Debit Mastercard. Online shopping limits are included in your Point of Sale Limit.
Upon receiving your new card, you will notice a sticker that includes the following activation instruction: "To activate your card, please enter PIN at an ATM or merchant as your first transaction.”
Once you have received and activated your new card, we recommend destroying your existing MemberCard for security purposes.
Your Debit Mastercard will be mailed to the address on file. If your address has recently changed, please visit your local branch or contact us to update your information.
Your card will be set up with the same PIN as your existing MemberCard. To activate your new card, please insert it and enter your PIN during your first transaction.

If you’re shopping at a store and you are prompted to choose between “debit” and “credit”, choose debit.
When using your Debit Mastercard online, the funds come out of the primary account associated with the card. This is the same account that you access when you tap to make a debit purchase.
Many hotels and other merchants accept Debit Mastercard, but acceptance can vary by location and business. Some may require a credit card instead. We recommend contacting the hotel, rental agency, or merchant in advance to confirm their payment policies before making a reservation.
Please note that when you use your debit card to make a reservation, the merchant may place a temporary hold on funds in your account to secure the booking. You must have sufficient funds available to cover this hold. If you’re unsure of the hold amount, ask the merchant directly. You can also view any active holds through your online banking.
When you make an online, pre-authorized, or international purchase with your Debit Mastercard, the merchant may place a temporary hold (sometimes slightly higher than the purchase amount ex. prepaying for gas at a gas station) on your account.
This hold reduces your available balance immediately, but the transaction won’t appear in your history or be deducted from your balance until it posts - typically within 24-48 hours, depending on the merchant. Your available balance reflects what you can spend after holds. Note that some online retailers only charge your card once your item has shipped.
Mobile Banking App:
To view the hold on your account in the mobile banking app, log in and select your main account. Just below your account balance, tap Account Details. A dropdown menu will appear, and the hold amount will be displayed beneath your current balance.
Online Banking:
To view the hold through online banking, log in and select your main account. Below the account name, click the + pin the right hand side of Account Details. The expanded menu will show the hold amount listed beneath your account number.
Yes. Your Debit Mastercard includes several built-in security features. The card number is printed on the back of the card to help reduce the risk of someone looking at your card during in-store purchases.
You’re also protected by both Mastercard’s Zero Liability and Interac Zero Liability policies for unauthorized credit and debit transactions.
Your Debit Mastercard uses multiple security features to help protect your information online, including 3D Secure authentication and real-time transaction alerts.
With 3D Secure, you may be asked to enter a one-time passcode to confirm your purchase. You can choose to receive the code by email or text, then enter it to securely complete your transaction.
You may also receive real-time text alerts if a transaction appears suspicious, allowing you to quickly confirm whether the purchase is legitimate.
If you notice any unauthorized transactions or if your card has been lost or stolen, please log in to online banking or the mobile app and use the Lock ‘N’ Block feature to secure your card as soon as possible. To report your card as lost or stolen, or for assistance with other matters, please contact your branch. Once you receive your replacement card, you will need to unlock your Lock’N’Block using online banking or the mobile app.
